Old Colleagues News – May 2016

Season so Far

Many things to report especially those items rugby related since the Old Colleague April email, also several events packed into a spectacular month of May weather. The Club started the season like a Ferrari and were unbeaten in all grades after three rounds! Unfortunately the blue giant Ferrari developed a wheel wobble and then during games against Mosman several wheels actually fell off.
Looking under the bonnet revealed a multitude of injuries to key players (inc several front rowers)
suffered in the early rounds. Fortunately it looks as though we will have a full tank of gas (most players back fit) for the June 4th Old Colleagues Day games against old foe Drummoyne. The best news is that the crucial early rounds have produced plenty of  Club Championship points and the Club is adopting a catch us if you can attitude. (a very good place to be, pole position ?)
Quickly looking at the other end of the Club Championship Lindfield and St Pats look to be fighting out the relegation wooden spoon, while blast from the past Waverley Old Boys look likely to join the Kentwell Cup in 2017. (Fortunately i’m assured that Iron Mike has retired)

Old Colleagues Day
This Saturday 4th June sees the annual Old Colleagues Day reunion at the Club. Games are against old foes Drummoyne Rugby Club AKA “the dirty reds”. A tough day in the office is expected in all grades and a big crowd of Old Colleague supporters will really help those Blue Giants across the line. Plenty of quality tucker and refreshments are available to ward of winter chills and help with the tall tales of great Colleague victories in years gone by.

Long Lunch
Not only did the Club host its first Ladies day in May but also the Club’s legendary Long Lunch in the same week.
A terrific Long Lunch afternoon was had by all. Reunion tables celebrated 20 years from 5 premierships in 1996 also for the younger Colleagues 5 years from the unforgettable 5 from 5 premierships in 2011. MC comedian Vince Sorenti tore up the crowd delivering laugh after laugh. Guest speaker Wallaby Coach Michael Cheika impressed with his insightful views on rugby and life!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank those table captains who gave up their time to organise a table or some even two tables. Putting together the Long Lunch is dependant on the support of  table captains and the table captain model underpins success of each years lunch. (thanks again)
Photos are up on the Clubs website.

Eddie Radford Farewell
Colleagues witnessed a unique tribute at the start of the game against Balmain to a club legend the late Ed Radford. The two clubs Kentwell Cup teams stood in line in centre field as one in silence to recognise Eddy’s passing. It was a special moment, when time stood still and an eery silence came over the big ladies day crowd to honour the great man. Photo on the Club’s website.
