Colleagues vs Drummoyne Round 8

Grand Final Re-Match Against Mosman

It was a successful day at Blue Giant Stadium for the home side last Saturday the always formidable Mosman Rugby Club. It was the first time the clubs have met since the 2016 Grand Finals and the Kentwell, Burke and Whiddon lads all got the job done. Burke and Whiddon put on a Rugby clinic for the boys from across the harbour, notching up 95 points to Mosman’s 6. For Kentwell it was classic game of two halves. Mosman came out strong and with some lucky bounces of the ball found themselves three tries up on 25 minutes in.

But in classic Colleagues style, the Kentwell boys rallied and put on 26 unanswered points just before and after half time. The highlight coming from tighthead prop Chris Price who threw a 15m cut out pass to his front row partner Charlie Henley, surprisingly standing out on the wing, who darted down the touch line to score in the corner. Stephen Larkham would have been impressed, as were the Old Boys on the balcony.

Scores vs Mosman

Kentwell 32 – 26 Mosman
Burke 43 – 6 Mosman
Whiddon 52 – 0 Mosman
Judd 14 – 34 Mosman
Sutherland 19 – 5 Mosman
Halligan 15 – 7 Mosman
Barbour 17 – 17 Mosman

Colleagues host Dirty Reds

Tomorrow afternoon the Blue Giants will host the current leaders of the Club Championship, Drummoyne. When these sides met in round 1, the Dirty Reds lived up to their name so expect plenty of fireworks tomorrow particularly come 3:15pm when the Colleagues Kentwell side will look to be the first side to knock off the visitors this season.

Today’s headlines:

* Roving Colleagues Lion peaks early to score moral victory over the dutch: Kentwell winger, and local Irish portable larger disposal unit, Niall “Gilly” Gilhooly, has never been one to stray from contact, and true to form he hit the pubs in the sleepy harbour town of Auckland running last weekend. Typically Gilly enjoys a roving commission by Coach waters every weekend at BGS, and scouts can report that he has taken this to new heights recently by living up to the lyrics of Irish folk classic “the Wild Rover”.

As a results Jetstar stocks have plummeted due to a critical shortage to their courtesy beverage supply, as the canny Irishman exploited the little known loop hole of “No RSA over international waters”. Colleagues old boy network have phoned in varied sightings of Gilly over the weekend, starting with his smuggling of 5 liters of Jaegermeister through customs, arguing with Hostel staff over the appropriateness of drinking said Jaegermeister upon arrival, and fighting invisible enemies 12 hrs later at Eden Park. Asked for comment, Gily stated “Sure, any f*cker in a black jersey can win a bloody rogby game boi… fek it… but there is a lot to be said about drinkun the bastards unda deh table… Sure, why do you tink they call me Gily?!? cause I drink like a fish, and haven’t needed a shower in a week!”. In related news, coach Laurie Campbell recently re-stated he still won’t take Gily into Judd cup because “the #$% can’t defend and isn’t fit, when Waters and Minu get sick of him, he is going straight to Robbo with the other alcoholics”.

* “Last of the Scaffolders” narrowly avoids front row with spiffy new haircut: Following our story from a few weeks back about coach Waters genius recruitment policy of raiding local scaffolding sites, colleagues has been reduced to a thinner skeleton crew than most sites experience on Watangi day. With fellow bros Charlie “Rollerblades” McDonald and Liam “Short shorts” Nichols sidelined with a bad case of “Lions tour fever”, the pride of the shaky isles has fallen on the broad shoulders of Richard “Harvey” Harvey. As a parting gift, flat mate “RollerBlades” McDonald informed coaching staff “Chur bro, Harvey can play all across the front row aye”. Sensing blood in the water, the coaches pounced on the 89kg giant, and had him pencilled in as starting loose head in Kentwell last week. To their dismay, Harvey was one step ahead, and had invested in a “mean haircut, like that Harvey Specter dude from Suits that everyone nick names me after aye”. Colleagues legend Cam Ireland took one glance at young Harvey’s new lid and suffice to say, he Harvey has found himself relegated to the doldrums of the Judd back row to “have a long hard look at his life choices”. More to come.

*With the Australian Maccabi team now over in Israel for the 2017 Maccabi games, video has surfaced from the final fundraising dinner before the team flew out. Colleagues own Tony Kastelan can be seen in the attached video carving up the dance floor in effort to lift donations to the team. A stewardess contacted by Colleagues #fakenews revealed that Mr Kastelan spent the first leg of their trip to Tel Aviv inside the restroom and the second leg trying to recreate the same moves in the aeroplane aisle.

The Manatee Mumble

Tough game against Mosman last week with mixed results across the grades. The whales were definitely fired up with their players receiving a number of yellow cards for turning the game into a boxing match. Most notably in the Suthos and a colties matches! We will need to expect more of that this weekend when we take on the dirty reds. Expect a tough match in the forwards and a tough first 20 minutes in all grades. After the game we have a couple of tables booked in the Woolly for the Lions vs ABs so get in involved!

Manatee out..

Colleagues vs Mosman Round 7

Grand Final Re-Match Against Mosman

Colleagues take on Mosman tomorrow for the first time since last year’s Grand Final. That day the Blue Giants battled it out against the Whales in the top 3 grades for the Premiership title, with the good guys coming through in Burke and Whiddon. We all remember how the Kentwell Cup finished so let’s not recap that.

Tomorrow it’s a slightly different story for the two clubs, with the same three grades sitting midway up their respective ladders. Drummoyne and Petersham are proving to be the club’s to beat in 2017. The Dirty Reds have only dropped one game in the top three grades thus far. That’s next week’s challenge for the Blue Giants.

Colleagues Kentwell Cup welcome back their NSW Subbies representatives into the side as well as the club’s most beautiful man, Josh “I said I loved you but I lied” Boulton. The elusive openside flanker’s form in Burke Cup in recent weeks has earnt him his first start in Kentwell this week. His mobility around the park is second only to his mobility around the lovely ladies at the Woollahra Hotel.

#FakeNews

Today’s headlines:

Given the extradition of our good friends Lindfield from last year’s Div 1 competition, a source in deep within the governing body can reveal the NSW suburban rugby union has now focused their eyes on the overall playing group, checking visas and Australian residencies in a hope to realign grass roots rugby back to the glory days. With the recent Wallabies shock loss to Scotland still taking hold from last weekend and the playing ranks reportedly in turmoil, the ARU has for the first time contacted grass roots rugby pursuing the tag line #makerugbygreatagain in hope they assist in keeping players from exiting the game. Their approach which has been endorsed by ARU’s well respected CEO Bill Pulvner, is to ‘weed out’ all expat players from grass roots rugby and really focus on the “core’ players.

With a plethora of men residing from ‘over the duch’ colleagues is currently under investigation for importing too many players not originating from Straya. A statement from the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union (NSWSRU) chairman states: “The suburban rugby competition is focusing on key attributes in players in the 2018 season, with all players next year having to undergo written & verbal tests to qualify as a registered player”

The assessment will somewhat depict the Australian citizens test currently undertaken by refugees and immigrants, including having to explain the terms ‘thong’ and ‘gernie’ in depth, just to name a few, as well as having the ability to crush 20+ golden throat Chalmers on a Friday evening prior to game day Saturday (while still maintaining a single digit beverage consumption per facility rule). Colleagues secretary Dave Burnett provided a statement to #Fakenews “All Colleagues players are currently being consulted one-on-one with, tutoring currently being organised to ‘upskill’ our expats in Australian colloquialisms”. The NSWSRU will be rolling out the assessments in the lead up to next year’s season through an app in the coming months, and encourage all those affected to get right into it. #Fakenews tried to contact a one Mr Richard ‘SAV’ Saville (right) for comment on behalf of the New Zealand Expat Rugby Union Players Association (NZERUPA) however we have been informed he does talk to media or comment on any issues or talk at all.

Colleagues players can book in time for ‘clarification’ around these new rules and vernacular at the Woollahra hotel from Monday – Sunday from between the hours of 5pm – 12pm.

NB* Woollahra Collegues Rugby Club will happily sponsor any player emproiled in the above issues but please contact Winston ‘I’m not a first grader’ Bradley via fax only on (02) 4568 6895.

Despite wild rumours to the contrary fake news has been reliably informed that Burke cup enforcer Darcy Henry Lewis Hilton’s “FTP” leg tattoo does not in fact stand for “F%ck the Police”.  Fake News understands that Mr Hilton has been a groupie of the band Foster The People (known by all real fans as FTP) ever since they released the alternative/indie banger “Pumped up Kicks” in 2011.  On the back of this revelation Mr Hilton’s intimidation factor has taken a serious blow.  He is understood to have been sited asking for tips on how to get his fear factor back from well-known club hard man Nick “Flowers” Valentine.  Watch out Mossman.

The Manatee Mumble

Welcome back to rugby Colleagues!

With a disjointed start to the season we now have 5 weeks of games to set us up for the club championship and the run to finals. It all starts on Saturday against Mosman. The whales play a similar style to Colleagues and with the extra weeks off its going to be a tough game across the grades.

There will be beers and Wallabies/Lions on in the clubhouse so stick around and help cheer on Kentwell in a rematch of last years GF… going to be a cracking game!

Old Colleagues News – June 2017

Old Colleagues News June 2017

OLD COLLEAGUE DAY 22ND JULY
Old Colleagues your attendance is required at Blue Giant Park for the games against Waverley Rugby Club. Should be a great afternoon with very competitive rugby. Plenty of memories of great clashes with Waverley in the 1980’s.

Season So Far!

Since the May news not a great deal has made the headlines. A close game against the undefeated Petersham losing 27-21 and then a loss away to Balmain (played without our 6 Subbies Team Representatives plus a number of key injured giants missing).

The Petersham game was a very tough and lively affair with the lead changing hands several times during the game. Every time the Blue Giants looked to have the Shammies measure a Giant error would occur or the Giant’s took a wrong option as they say! A close win by the Competition leaders and they enjoyed edging out the Colleagues once again in their short history back in the Kentwell Cup.
Petersham as a club were well organised in all grades, it was evident they have developed a strong club culture (read inner city larrikin) , however their fashion sense was a little off beat and they also lost the skulls after the speeches in the clubhouse (read it and weep lads) !

Nevertheless what the game proved was if this is the standard then the Blue Giants at their best are up to their eyeballs in the Kentwell Cup Competition!

This weekend Sat 24th June its crunch time for the Colleagues at home to Mosman. A strong club performance is required to keep in touch with Club Championship leaders Drummoyne. Its looking like perfect conditions for rugby and the big screen in the club house will have the international games on as well. Rugby Heaven by any definition, get on down and support the Giants I’m sure its appreciated by the boys in blue.

Long Lunch Post Script

Wal Carpenter (1980’s back row flyer) found himself feeling a bit crook at the Long lunch. Fortunately post lunch excitement Wal did the sensible thing and got checked out by the medicos!!!!
resulting in”last minute” coronary bypass surgery. I’m told Wal’s chest looks like a test sheet from a singer sowing factory, however best news is that he is making a steady recovery and looking forward to future Blue Giant long lunches! Email get well soon to walter@wrcarpenters.com

Show us your Speedos

Old Colleague Greg Quinn is our first Blue Giant to feature in a new Series in the monthly news.
“Show us your Speedos”
In this series I am asking Old Colleagues from far and wide to send a pic modelling the Colleague Speedo. Quinny does a great job with our first pic, former fighting fit tight head prop seen here at Trisara Resort in Phuket recently has obviously been in a good paddock but has the Blue Giant class to pull off a great pic! (go you good thing)

Old Colleague Stars at Briars Lunch

Colleagues member of 60 years standing, Life Member John (Wal) Corliss
was recently honoured at a luncheon with a presentation from Briars Rugby’s
Richard Crookes for coaching the Subbies team (circ)1964 that has been
described as the team that saved subbies rugby’s standing in relation to 2nd div.
(Details are vague but apparently a highly competitive situation in the 60’s) Congrats Wal, I’m sure there are plenty of yarns to be told about this victory. (Wals Pic here with 5ths James robbo)

Another One Bites the Dust

Front rowers are making the news this month with front guru Jeremy Nesbitt announcing his engagement to the loverly Vienna. Based in Honkas, Nez is one of many Old Colleagues still active in the Hong Kong Rugby scene. Word is a serious bucks weekend is being organised in conjunction with this years Bali 10’s in mid October. Well done mate! Contact Spanner if you want to get on board ! Email: adrian1237@bigpond.com for tour details.

Colleagues @ Balmain Round 5

Lower Grades Lead the Way Against Petersham

In a reverse of fortunes from one week earlier against Waverley, it was the Colleagues lower grade who carried the club home against a very strong Petersham Rugby Club at Woollahra Oval No.2 last Saturday.

In their year up in division 1, Petersham have come a long way to be leading the competition in Kentwell Cup and second in the Club Championship, 87 points behind Drummoyne. Colleagues currently in 4th place on 701 points.

The Sutherland Cup lads got the club off to a good start with a 50 to nil win over the visitors. Tries coming from right across the paddock, backrower James Davies (right) snagging a double and flyhalf Jon Dart kicking 6 goals in the match. The Judd and Whiddon boys had a harder day of it, only notching up 3 and 8 points respectively. That surprisingly being enough points in each of their games to beat their opponents.

For Kentwell Cup it was a classic top of the table clash with the lead changing hands multiple times throughout the match. Unlike previous matches that saw the Colleagues outside backs getting the meat pies, it was the forward pack who secured all the five pointers for the home side. No.8 Charles McDonald, second rower Evan Culhane (right) and hooker Charlie Henley all touched down for the Blue Giants. Unfortunately the loss also came with a loss to key personnel. Veteran prop David Wright unfortunately sustained a partially torn Achilles tendon in the opening scrum of the match and will miss the remainder of the season. We wish him well on in his recovery.

Scores vs Petersham

• Kentwell 21 – 27
• Burke 13 – 29
• Whiddon 8 – 5
• Judd 3 – 0
• Sutherland 50 – 0
• Halligan 17 – 0 Sydney Harlequins
• Barbour 12 – 24

Today’s headlines:

Sources say security in and around the Dome is loosening with reports that three more players have broken out. An insider says Charlie Lockyer, Chris Watt and some outside back known only as “Rob” have headed north to Whiddon territory. Coach Campbell refused to comment sighting that his quoted 1 dummy spit a year was spent last week at half time during Judd Cup’s scintillating 3-0 win over Petersham.

Rumours are circulating that tensions between the Colleagues backline coaches are rising, after Burke Cup coach Pete Minucos continues to insist upon selecting every flyhalf in the club in his second grade backline. Minucos was heard to have said “I’ll play Issy (Isaac ‘Wizard’ Carey) wherever the f#%k I want.” Whiddon Coach Carl O’Sullivan has reportedly reached out to his Judd Cup counterpart Laurie Campbell, enquiring if his dome supplier could build a single man dome for Whiddon flyhalf Sean Cross.

Reports have surfaced that 2017’s first application for the 100 game honour board has been provided to Club President McGrath.  Sources report that the application is in favour of Damon “Dingo” Holmes.  Despite having only played 42 games for the club Dingo is apparently confident his application will be accepted.  After a few golden throat charmers last Saturday Dingo was overheard saying “if Frank Coorey can get on there after 80 odd then I damn well deserve it after 40”.   With his shoulders having recovered from carrying Dingo through his season as Club Captain, social media advisor and club secretary David Burnett is allegedly in support of the application.

Why I rent my car out: Sam Deans explains what sharing means to him.

Sam Deans, former Whiddon cup finalist, heard about Car Next Door in July last year. Within 6 months he’d earned over $1,000 by renting out his car, helping to offset the costs of owning it.

Car Next Door is a neighbour-to-neighbour car sharing platform, founded by Colleagues member Will Davies in Bondi in 2013. The fast-growing startup is changing the way Australia travels, by turning any car into a share car through an online platform, simple in-car technology and full comprehensive insurance.

1,000 cars have been listed on the platform already, with over 35,000 borrowers screened and approved to borrow them.

“It’s so easy,” said Sam. “Car Next Door’s platform is very hands off for me. I can be anywhere in the world and still make money on my car. It sits on the street most of the time, so it just makes sense”.

Sam also received $150 to kick-start his earnings when he first listed his car, which he says was a great added bonus to get him started.

“I got some bookings right away, which was cool,” says Sam.

“I generally don’t meet the borrowers in person though – I’ve met a few, but usually they just come and go while I am doing other stuff. It’s like the Tinder of transport”.

Through Car Next Door, car owners earn $2,000 to $8,000 a year by renting out their car when they aren’t using it.  Car borrowers can instantly rent cars nearby from $5 an hour or $25 a day (plus 33 cents per km).

Offer for Colleagues Players from Car Next Door!

A Word from Winston

All grades were no doubt hard up against it last weekend. Colties had a long awaited hit out against their drinking associates from College/Uni, unfortunately letting the boys from Petersham get the better of them in a close encounter – well done for a gutsy effort gents. For Judd, our French flyer Louis Vuitton lived up to classy name on the field standing out in a tight 3-0 win, hats off to the “ice-man” Tom Scott for slotting the penalty. The Whiddos game also came down to the wire, getting the job done 8-5, stand outs were loosies Richie and Darcy.

Burke and Kentwell were put through their paces by well-drilled Petersham outfits. The standings for both comps are tight as a ducks ass as we approach the middle of the season and much needed break for two wet weather weekends after Balmain.

Cam “Evergreen” Ireland and Jono “Prince of Otago” Willis make a keenly anticipated return to the Kentwell forward pack this week. Cam and Jono not only bring some scorching pace to the team but also crucial leadership, Jono has earnt his first Kentwell Cup cap as captain this week. Their timely return will benefit the debut of former Easts enforcer Davo McCathie, welcome Davo and good luck to all for tomorrows show down.

Colleagues vs Petersham Round 5

Kentwell Stride Out at Waverley

It was a day of truly mixed results last Saturday when Colleagues took on Waverley Rugby Club for the first time in a decade. Waverley were very strong in the lower grades but could keep up with the San Pellegrino rugby the Kentwell team were pouring out.

The Judd Cup lads were the only team to get up below Kentwell, with inside centre Charlie Lockyer score all of the Blue Giants 15 points. Lockyer scored two tries, converted one and slotted a plenty in windy conditions up at Dover Heights to get it over the men from Bondi.

The most pleasing thing coming out of the Kentwell Cup match was, for not the first time this season, all tries (bar one) were scored by the outside backs. A sign the Blue Giants are playing great team rugby with the pretty boys touching over in the corners.

It’s going to be a very different opposition this week, for Colleagues first grade in particular with Petersham on top of the ladder with four from four wins. The Shamies have it over the Blue Giants in recent years, with three wins from the last four outings in the top grade. Providing some inside knowledge will be No.8 Charles McDonald (right) and halfback Luke Bryson, both former Petersham lads who found their way east after a crusiy summer down at Bondi.

#FakeNews

Today’s headlines:

* Weal-er dealer trashes Bondi Bentley: It has long been a tradition for the Judd cup team to host a pre-match Strategy session at Ryan’s Bar, and last Friday was no different. In between rounds of “schooie schooie moi moi’s” amateur meteorologist, Nick “Wiki-leaks” Weal, felt a sprinkle of precipitation strike his schooner arm and was immediately inspired. Sources report that the young Dome prodigy decided to pitch the brainstrust a winning formula from his home town of Moree, that is the infamous practice of “Running the Gauntlet”. Details of the plan are hazy, however club legend Benny Abrahams informs the Newsletter that the strategy is not one that is alien to Colleagues rugby, and it essentially involved “inhaling as many darts, and cans of black rats as you can, and praying like #$%* that it rains enough for a wash out”. The plan won resounding support, so much so that Weal called in a favour from the Russian Club on Bondi Rd, to “boost” a post on the Player Portal reporting that Saturday games were in fact washed out. Considering the player portals previous top post had a staggering 2 likes, the feat was easily achieved and the club rejoiced over a few sugar cane champagnes. Unfortunately for our resident Kiwi dating app enthusiast, Mike Bentley, the #FakeNews did not agree with his stomach at 10am when he proceeded to “regale” his fellow Colleagues with an itemized list of his previous night’s beverage selection and the remains of a late night lamb sandwich. Despite all this, Pundits have applauded Weal’s ploy, as it appeared to give the Dome a mental edge over the much more sober Waverley opponent, with Laurie’s men running out victors 14 spews to nil (14-7 in the traditional scoring system).

* One Hoppa gives digits, whilst other takes a righteous path: Colleagues stalwarts and local lotharios, the Hoppa brothers, usually present a united front in matters of the heart. However younger brother, Harry, was left dumbstruck last Saturday when his older brother “dragged the good Hoppa name through the mud!”. In a tell all, Harry proudly reported in to his fellow Juddies, his recent chaperoning of some fine young eastern suburbs ladies following “a quick exchange of digits” last ladies day. After reporting back to the family scoreboard, adjudicated by their mother, Mrs Hoppa, Harry was shocked to find he had just lapped older brother, Patrick’s weekly count. When investigating the scoring anomaly, Hoppa Snr confessed at the family dinner that he had refused a 4am Manly request to “Save myself for the Judd game at 10am”. As a puritan whose six pack “hasn’t seen a carb since the 10th grade”, Hoppa Snr had missed teammate, Nick Weal’s, strategy guide and instead spent Friday night doing sets of burpees whilst polishing his Blood Orange v8 Holden Ute until 2am in the morning. Experts and close followers of Keeping up with the Hoppa’s, are predicting Patrick’s 26 year tenancy at the family’s Bellevue Hill estate to be on “thin ice” following his fall from grace.

* Local scaffolding company shuts down for the weekend due to Waters damage: Local scaffolding entrepreneurs are up in arms this week having to shut down a major Bondi construction site following a “Working Visa raid” by Kentwell coach, Ben Waters. Anonymous sources report, towing the amateur Rugby line, the cunning Waters has employed good old fashioned blackmail to his recruitment arsenal, and landed a whopping 5 kiwis to swell the Kentwell ranks this week. Fortunately for Waters, the new colleagues “bros” were not up to date with the latest immigration laws, and as such didn’t realise that they didn’t ever need a visa to work in Australia, nor was esteemed local resident, President Trumbull, planning to build a wall at Bondi Junction. Asked for comment, recruit Charlie McDonald, stated “Bro, all I am interested in is hanging out with the Hoppa brothers at the Sheaf after the game, and getting that KFC bucket DK promised me if I brought the cuzzies down”. In related news, Waters also now owns the very shameful club record of fielding a Kentwell team with the least amount of GPS Private School graduates in club history. If the game on Saturday comes down to a family net-worth tie breaker, Colleague’s rugby is for the first time in a long time looking vulnerable. Fortunately for Waters, the game will be played on the rugby ground and not the ASX.

Whiddon coach made over $23,000 sharing his car

Car Next Door is a start up founded by former Colleague Will Davies in 2013. Car owners earn $2-8,000 per year renting their car out when they aren’t using it, and locals can instantly rent cars nearby from $5 an hour or $25 a day (plus 33 cents per kilometre).

Many of you will know Carl O’Sullivan, former Colleague player and long time Whiddon coach. Carl listed his 2007 Mazda 3 in 2013 and has since generated over $23,000 in net income for his car. It just seemed like a good idea.” said Carl. “It’s good for the environment, giving back to the community and make a bit of pocket money on the side.”

As a sponsor of Colleagues, Car Next Door is extending two special offers for Colleagues players, family and friends. (USE THE CODE ‘COLLEAGUES’ in the ‘where did you hear about us’ section to receive the following deals):

A Word from Winston

Waverly undoubtedly lived up to our anticipations of being a tough hit out across all grades. Standouts across the grounds were colts halfback Archie Weston, Charlie “Darren” Lockyer ran a clinic for Judd scoring all of the teams points – earning himself a Guernsey in Whiddon this week. In Whiddon Cup, Cronan Healy returned back to the type of form scarcely seen since the early Ireland International Club days seen below putting the moves on another former Colleague Dougie Brown. And club ladies’ man Josh Boulton found himself not only earning 3 points for Burke but also tore it up for 60 mins in Kentwell as well.

One of our kiwi recruits, Charles McDonald stood out in the Kentwell match with a massive effort with and without the ball declaring after the game “I just love smashing those big fellas that think they’re tougher than me aye cuz”. Well done Charles, tomorrow is another test for the former ITM Cup lock as he faces off against his old Petersham teammates – good luck Charles and all players for Petersham this weekend.

Old Colleagues News – May 2017

OLD COLLEAGUES DAY CONFIRMED 22nd JULY
OLD Colleagues your attendance is required at Blue Giant Park for the games against Waverley Rugby Club. Should be a great afternoon with very competitive rugby. Plenty of memories of great clashes with Waverley in the 1980’s.

Long Lunch Wrap up
What a great afternoon had by all. MC (Old Colleague) Laurie Coy gave us plenty of laughs while keeping control of proceedings. Current player Issac Carey did a surprisingly good job of interviewing Wallabies Dave Croft and Phil Waugh, while auction bidding was furious thanks to the slick talking skills of Matt Aubrey. Fine dining, beers and wines were of the highest standard unlike some of the guests by the end of the afternoon. Special mention to our oldest and boldest Old Colleague for the afternoon Mr Peter Ball (AKA the rock). Ballie played halfback in the Kentwell and Burke in the 1960’s. They say his pass was as fast as he puts down those beers !
Special thanks also to long time long lunch sponsor Ian Purchas.

Season Starts
Colleagues travelled to the Dirty Reds for the first game of the season. Unfortunately the successes we have seen at Drummoyne Oval in previous years were not forth coming in round one. Underdone due to wet weather limiting training, a short trial game period also missing several high profile players due to retirement and unavailability and injury only the mighty Blue Giant Colts and Judd sides were able to register Club Championship points. The Kentwell boys however put in an very honest effort and with a bit of luck could have finished closer. Drummoyne in both Burke and Kentwell look to my eye to be two very strong teams this season.

The Dirty Reds lived up to their nick name producing two red cards late in the game and in doing so forfeited a $10,000 bond from for too many Red cards last season !
Nine red cards is the limit through the grades over the season. Currently they have three (we are counting).

The games against Drummoyne seemed to be a bad memory after what happened next (Round 2). On a glorious Autumn day with a Ladies Day in full swing as only the Blue Giants can do, the Club put on a much improved performance against Knox Old Boys especially the Kentwell Cup scoring 75 points in a game as entertaining as the vision on the sidelines! From memory the score 75-12 is the biggest on home soil ever (11 tries). It was an outstanding game, one of those where every ball stuck and thrilled the large crowd! A memorable day for sure.

It was back to reality in round 3 with the games against St Pats. While the lower grades started the blue rinse cycle,it was the Kentwell Cup who needed an extra spin cycle to complete the program.
St Pats have done some extensive recruiting from far flung islands. Plenty of toughness in attack and defence and  put on a game and a half against our Kentwell boys. It was only some outstanding defence that kept the opposition out and the good guys prevailed but not till the final whistle. Old Colleagues were held breathless on the balcony, a very tough day in the office for all!

The Blue Giants travelled to Waverley (round 4) for the first local derby in 10 years. Waverley have done well coming from almost extinction to be back in the Kentwell Cup. Last time in they were a very successful Club winning four Club Championships 1989-92, three Kentwell Cups in 1989-91 plus two Burke, one Whiddon, five Judd Cups and five Sutherland Cups during that period!
With a new grand stand and first class ground and facilities Waverley (5 teams, a colts and a women’s team) look to have the makings of a strong Club into the future.

And so it was in the lower grades on the day with the Blue Giants comprehensively loosing the Sutherland, Whiddon and Burke Cups. Our saviour was the Kentwell Cup with a magnificent show of running rugby (8 tries combined with an outstanding kicking performance by Captain Dan Kelly (seven conversions and one penalty producing a 57-14 win.
Colleagues Kentwell are now placed forth on the Competition ladder with important games against Petersham and Mosman (above them on the table) in the coming weeks.

Next home games are against Petersham Sat 27th (this Saturday) with the current spell of beautiful weather what better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than on the club house balcony??

FINDING NEMO
Old Colleagues have mentioned that its getting harder to find the weekend results in the newspapers. Best way these days is online www.rugby.net.au

Colleagues @ Waverley Round 4

First Outing at Waverley in 10 Years

Colleagues will make the short trip over to Bondi Road for the first time in 10 years this Saturday to take on the newly promoted Waverley Rugby Club. It was 2006 that these great clubs last met, with Waverley spending time in as far down as 3 division from 2007. Since then the club has done great things to not only bring themselves back up to the top grade of NSW Suburban rugby but to establish a club deep with six senior grades, colts, ladies and an over 35s teams, all of which will be running around this Saturday.

The Blue Giants are coming off a stellar Blue Rinse against St Pats two weeks ago, with the final match of the day coming down to the final play of the game, in which St Pats got held up over the try line in Colleagues corner to fall 4 points shy of victory. The Kentwell team put on an incredible final defensive effort to keep out a very large and physical St Pats side.

The Colleagues lower grades had easier outing against the lad from Strathfield, accumulating 146 points to St Pats 29. Leo Guthrie and Josh Bolton had a great day out in the Whiddon Cup match, snagging a try and 3 conversions each.

Today’s headlines:

* Kentwell favourite “Seagull” renamed the “Ibis”, aka “bin chicken” following out of character behaviour:  Scouts report strange behaviour this season from Kentwell Winger-come-Hooker, Charlie “The Seagull” Henley. The Seagull’s social media feed has shown a marked change in 6 months trading in his former pre-match ritual of 3am glasses of sugarcane champagne, for long walks on the beach and “almond lattes”. Many blame the change as the primary reason the Seagull has been left languishing at the foot of the try scorers table, following a breakout 2016 campaign. Sources close to the “Ibis” have reported odd behaviour, such the “De Kok-ing” of teammates at training, tackling in games and feasting off the scraps left over by the dashing tearaway tight head, David Wright. Whilst forwards coach, Ash Riley, welcomes the “Bin Chicken’s” new found graft, head coach Ben Waters is reportedly looking to get club stalwart, Alex Cheng, back to take a more traditional Colleague’s Hooking role. More to come.

* Police investigations continue, as Subbies captain considers charges: The biggest scandal to hit the club since Pappy last attended a Silly Sunday is set to rock the club further as the Subbies captain, DK, considers charges against Colleagues Rugby. Reports are coming in that DK has been sighted with legal counsel and the Sub Districts board, discussing the viability of a case to sue Colleagues for damages to the representative team’s season.  Colleague’s old boy Tom “TJ” Johnston, was not concerned about the “weak case” stating “Mate, if I can get KB off for the texting incident, I can get Colleague’s off anything… if the phone does not fit, you must acquit!!”.

* Missing team sheet points to wider conspiracy, as Judd cup surges to the top of table: For the second consecutive week, coach Carlos is left perplexed as he has very few players to choose from to fill the Whiddon cup 15. Rumours have surfaced that a number of “All Black Trialists” have made the pilgrimage from the Gold Coast to Manion Avenue, however, their rego sheets have not been sighted by the club secretary. Judd Supremo, Laurie Campbell, so far will not budge on his stance to either submit a team sheet, or at least stop completing the sheet with the name “Chris Knight” listed from 1 to 15. Campbell refused to comment to the reports, or at least comment anything that is fit for publication.

Couple of Colleagues Heading Up NSW Subbies Rep Team

New Colleagues Club Skills Coach Matt Barlow and Kentwell backrower Dave Burnett have been appointed the coaches of the NSW Subbies Rep team for 2017. In what is scheduled as the “away” year, the NSW Subbies Rep side will play NSW Country on  Sunday June 4th in Camden and a match against QLD Subbies some time later in June. Barlow and Burnett’s last partnership as co-coaches was back in 2010 with the Sydney U16s that defeated both NSW & QLD Schoolboys to win the National Championship. Playing in that team is the now Wallaby centre Reece Hodge.

Currently trialing in the NSW Subbies squad are Kentwell players; prop Dave Wright, hooker Charlie Henley, second rower Charles McDonald, backrower Evan Culhane, half back Duncan Boyd Jones and flyhalf Dan Kelly. The team will be pick next Thursday 25th May.

Colleagues vs St Pats – Round 3

Colleagues put on a show for Ladies Day

After a slow start to the season against Drummoyne, the Blue Giants hit their straps against Knox Old Boys in Round 2 at Woollahra No. 2 Oval last Saturday. In front of a roaring Ladies Day home crowd of over 500, Colleagues put out 8 teams against varying opposition and got up in all but 3, this included a Sutherland Cup win over Premiership club Northern Suburbs 5th grade side and a 75-12 drumming of Knox in the Kentwell Cup match.

With a lot of talk in the media about the decline in Rugby participation numbers in recent years, the 2017 season seems to be working against that trend. Not only are Colleagues boasting more player numbers than in previous years, but 7 Premiership clubs also have 5th grades sides this season, with some having 4th colts sides playing in the Redfield Cup with Colleagues 2nds Colts and Lane Cove 2nd Colts. Colleagues Sutherland Cup have also been competitive and victorious in their two ‘friendlies’ against Gordon and Norths 5th so far this season. It’s going to be a busy Rugby calendar for the Blue Giants this year.

A beautiful sunny autumn day greeted the hordes of Rugby fans down at Blue Giant Stadium for the first home game and Ladies Day of the year. With cold Endeavour craft beer on tap and delicious canapes from The Caterer, the Colleagues Ladies and Sponsors Day was a hit. And if all that wasn’t enough the Colleagues Kentwell Cup team put on a Rugby master class against the lads from the leafy north. The home side put on 11 tries from glorious running rugby, with new outside centre James Muir scoring a hat-trick.

Ladies Day #1 presented by Solar D

What a day it was. Thanks to all the lovely ladies who came out and enjoyed a fantastic day of running rugby.

A massive thanks to our Ladies Sponsor Solar D, the delicious food from The Caterer and the crisp craft beer from Endeavour. Get pumped for Ladies Day #2 on Saturday 12th August.

Well done to the Colleagues Social committee for putting on the day.

The Manatee Mumble

A big thank you to the guys involved in a successful ladies day last Saturday. In particular Winston Bradley, Harry Aboud, Dave Burnett and Nick (Scrappy) Donlon who managed the bar. The day would not have been possible without your work behind the scene.

This week we take on St Pats at BGS. We know Pats will come out swinging across the grades, we just need to take it to them in the first 20mins and play our game from there. I’m hoping the kentwell boys will continue to show the attacking flair which brought a record win against Knox!

On the social side we finally have our Woollahra Hotel cards so if you have paid subs then please see Jon Ryan upstairs on Saturday. For those that managed to grab a card on Saturday night from the Woolly, please register with Jonny or it will be cut off and you’ll lose your discount!

Great night last Saturday boys. We will head to the Four in Hand after the game this week, remember to scan your card!

* Ladies day rim job by the Beach: In an attempt to woo some fine upstanding ladies of the East, Beachy dared Subbies captain, DK, to attempt the infamous “Shane Warne” skol last Saturday night at the Woollahra Hotel. Being a ladies day favourite, the amply equipped DK happily obliged attempting to eat his schooner immediately. Unbeknownst to him, the cunning “Little Giant”, planned to steal the show by threading a rugby ball between glass and schooner stream. Unfortunately for DK, Beachy’s recently broken elbow was not quiet up to the task, which meant the only thing getting wet that night was DKs shirt, and the stitches he was sporting a few hours later. Paramedics on hand assured concerned citizens not to worry as DK “will be right for the first game of the Subbies season”.

* French Dip: Scouts report plenty of talent on and off the field at Ladies day. However none as impressive as the efforts of two clean cut  “Lés Bleu Giants”, cutting conspicuous figures as they shaparoned lost young ladies to the portable toilets throughout the day.

* Dome man commeth: Kentwell coach, Ben Waters, reportedly is set to visit an optometrist this week. Upon enquiring for the name of the “highly impressive speedster” at full back for Judd cup, coach Laurie Campbell replied that the team didn’t have a full back, and in fact played a man short the whole game to “keep things interesting”. More to come.

Season starts with the Dirty Reds

The Blue Giants 2017 is here and kicks off tomorrow morning at Drummoyne Oval. Like most clubs in Sydney, Colleagues have had an on and off pre-season with Sydney coming of the wettest March on record.

With all that in the mix, two full club trials were played against Drummoyne and Mosman, with the Blue Giants getting up on both weekends across the grades.

This season will see a number of new faces across all teams at the club. After Grand Final appearances in Judd through to Kentwell Cup last season, Colleagues say goodbye to Kentwell tighthead Rob McMickan (retired), No.8 James Kennelly (moved to the Walgett), flyhalf Toby L’Estrange (retired, coaching Balmain), inside centre James McMahon (retired) and charging outside centre Mitch Mansfield (moved interstate).

The Colleagues coaching staff are looking forward to the challenge of a new wave of players stepping up the grades. Already impressing the coaches this preseason has been inside centre Winston Bradley (above), young utility back Tom Harbison and backrower Nick Fletcher (right).

In one season Winston Bradley has gone from captaining the Judd Cup premiership side, to a starting birth in Kentwell Cup tomorrow. Winston has been in fine form in the trials and has very much earnt he place in first grade.

Tom Harbison played in the premiership winning Whiddon Cup side last year at halfback but has excelled so far this season at flyhalf and fullback in Burke Cup.

In the forwards keep your eyes out for up and coming back rower Nick Fletcher. Fletch was the No.8 and captain of the 2015 Premiership colts team who spent last season recovering from a knee reconstruction. Nick will runout at openside flanker tomorrow in the Kentwell Cup match.

The Manatee Mumble

Well here we are, kick off for the 2017 season is finally here!!!

Unfortunately our preparation for this season was hampered by the unusual wet weather in March. For all the new players I ask for you to be patient as we sort out the grades, if you feel you are not in the right grade then please see  me.

This week we play Drummoyne away. Don’t let the trials fool you, the dirty reds always find new players last minute when the competition starts. All grades need to play wide and work across the pitch, the first 20mins will be hard but good defence and fitness should see Colleagues come home with a blue rinse!

After the game we will be heading to our new joint sponsor the Four in Hand in Paddington for $5.50 house beers and watch the rugby, sounds like a good weekend to me!

Manatee out…

He has assured me he will be back for a Grand Final beer as there hasn’t been many he’s missed.

Newport Breakers welcome Blue Giants

Old Colleague Heath Radel sends greeting to those Old Colleagues living by the northern beaches. Heath who is the Newport Breakers president would be happy to show Colleagues some Newport hospitality on game days during the season,

He is also on the lookout for any players, coaches or managers living north side who want to get involved in rugby again and give a hand at the breakers.

(careful this could bring back those old 1980’s memories of a miniature change room with a bonus cold shower)
