Old Colleagues News – October #2 2016

Its been a terrible few weeks for the Colleagues and our deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of  the late Bruce Hudson (1958-59) Julian Gregory (1976-77) Adam O’Reagan (1991-1994) and last Thursday 20th October, Jeremy Ingall (1981-82).

VALE Adam O’Reagan
Adam played for the Colleagues in the early 90’s. During this time he made many friends with his friendly inquiring nature always thinking of others. A big welcoming smile and sense of humour was the O’Reagan trademark, Adam managed the social committee for the Colleagues in 1994 successfully organising the Club’s annual ball at the Grand Hotel Bondi (no mean feat). On the field Adam was as honest as the day was long, playing his rugby in a tough boy from the bush manner always giving his best for the club. Adam was part of several GF teams culminating in a win with the victorious 5th grade team in 1994.

………….

I received a note from one of his team mates who said this about Adam

Greg Neher said

“This is horrible news. Adam was a great guy and extremely kind and welcoming to me when I first joined Colleagues. Boothie i hope you’ll indulge some Colleagues history but I was lucky enough to play Judd Cup with Adam in 1993. We just missed a premiership with the “three Adams” back row. He is remembered today in Seattle”.

…………

I remember Adam very much enjoying the 4th grade “Adam’s family” tag. It’s a memory of Ad’s which we can keep, along with plenty of other memories that will not be forgotten by those who knew him!

There is a web address for donations to support Adam’s family during this tough time.

VALE Jeremy Ingall

Brave to the end Jeremy diagnosed with dreadful cancer during the early part of this year passed away on Thursday night 20th Oct.

Jeremy was successful and respected by his peers a man who enjoyed life to the fullest, a man of the world with an outgoing and engaging personality, sadly gone at just 55 years of age. On behalf of all Old Colleagues I would like to convey sincere and deep condolences to Nicky his wife, his family and friends.

I was fortunate to play alongside Jeremy in the Burke Cup Premiership teams of 1981 and 1982. Always a good man to play with, tough and uncompromising in the engine room. Coach John Noice said at the time “Jeremy’s competitiveness and aggression was a reason the team had such successful years” Jeremy served on the Club’s committee in 1982 and has been a regular at the Club’s long lunch and Old Colleagues days.

Jeremy helped to organised a 30 year reunion of the 81 & 82 premiership teams in 2011 (photo above)

Old Colleagues News – September 2016

Colleague and Old Colleague News

SEASON WRAP (short version)

A huge congratulations go out to all Blue Giants (and Convicts) for their Grand Final successes. Wins in the Burke, Whiddon, Judd, Halligan (Convicts) and the treasured Club Championship proved once again that the Giants were the dominant club in the Subbies Competition.

Commiserations to our brave Kentwell Cup who looked to have the cup filled with sweet nectar and being passed around the Woollahra Hotel bound bus until the last minute, where the slightest of mistakes at the breakdown proved very costly. (beyond belief in fact) Nevertheless it was a great season and Old Colleagues will be looking forward to more great rugby from the Club in 2017.

Very sad news of the recent passing of two very fine Colleagues.

VALE JULIAN GREGORY

On behalf of the Woollahra Colleagues Rugby Club I would like to send condolences to the Gregory family. Julian played with distinction  with the club in the 70’s and many of the Older Colleagues will be saddened with the news of his passing. Regarded highly by his peers he will be remembered as not only as a tough genuine player on the field but also a gentleman of high quality off the field.
Sincere thoughts go out to the Gregory family at this time.

VALE BRUCE HUDSON

Condolences also go out to the Hudson family following the passing of Bruce Hudson. Bruce was one of our older Colleagues who played in the late 1950’s. Bruce was man of great stature with a huge and friendly smile and demenour. A great family man who was very proud to watch his sons Simon and Dane follow in his footsteps and play with distinction for the Club.
Sincere thoughts go out to the Hudson family as well at this time.

Old Colleagues News – Grand Final Report

Old Colleagues have asked what happened on Grand Final day ? Here are a few thoughts.

……………………………………………………………………………..

Writing this newsletter I am still numb with what happened on Grand Final Day 2016. As most Old Colleagues would now know the Blue Giants fought their way through the semi finals to find themselves with four teams in the big dance (new words for Grand Finals). The day offered much with perfect weather and a mid week rain event (more new words) producing a fast track fit for enterprising rugby.

The Judd Cup were first off the blocks (at the crack of dawn) against the usual St Pats Old Boys retirement village team (1000 games played by their front row). The game progressed as follows: after an initial 10 minutes where the giants were under pressure from the big Pats pack, finally we got the pill and never looked back with the fleet footed Blue Giant backs scoring some great tries!! Pats tried to come back several times but a resolute Colleagues pack led by Colleagues stalwart Chris Meharg defended stoutly and put up a blue defensive wall go you good things in the end wining 36-10 (Revenge after losing narrowly last year)

Next came the Whiddon Cup, could they reverse the poor playagainst the Mosman Whales from the major semi??? Well I would have to say that they certainly had the intensity and commitment however Old Colleagues at the game were still shaking their head long after the final whistle asking how a team could loose virtually every line out and every kick in the game and still win?? It was a real nail biter with the score Blue Giants 12- Mosman Whales 10 for most of the second half. A try on the bell and the Whales were out of their depth, final score 17-10. In the end total Commitment to the cause had overcome technique! (Revenge for Whiddo’s after losing narrowly last year)

The Burkies were next and the Colleagues were on a roll ! They came out firing scoring a early try and then another. Big second rower Michael Woodhouse causing damage all over the park. By the time Mosman woke up to what was going on the Giants had got some good rhythm and structure going and after putting up the blue defensive wall plus a late try to the good guys the score was 22-6. A scoreline reflecting for the state of play plus throw in (Revenge after losing narrowly last year)

The Colleagues crowd had grown by this stage for the main event. A long tunnel and some serious chanting brought the Colleagues Kentwell Cup onto the ground for what would be an epic final.

Mosman leading the comp for most of the season and minor premiers would be tough to toss but right from the outset you could feel the Blue Giant energy. Both sides putting on early points and nothing between two evenly matched sides. Skipper DK goes in under the posts and the Giants lead 19-14 at half time after playing out of their skins. Second half the same. Colleagues are all over the Whales like a barnacle rash. DK kicks two penalties its 25-14 still 20mins to go hopes are high for a magic finish. Suddenly Mosman get possession from broken play and score out wide 25-19 no conversion and then again Mosman drive over out wide, 25-24 but with time running out the feeling is still that the Colleagues will hold them out. A long range Colleague penalty kick hits the cross bar gallant reserve hooker Jono just misses gathering the ball under the posts, Mosman go wide again and reach the other end of the field, get a penalty shot and kick it to win, whistle goes Giants lose 27-25. “Wham bam cup jumps out of the can” !!

Still stunned and still feeling the pain of a magnificent team who represented the Club so well in the 2016 season. I say “hold your heads up Kentwell lets not forget the Bruce Graham Shield this season it is yours”, your Kentwell points ultimately made those magnificent men, the Blue Giant Colleagues the Championship Club of the year.

Mighty Colleagues,

Here we are! Four grades in the grand final, what a great achievement!!! But the job is not over, grand final wins are always hard to win. Having been part of GF winning and…. losing Colleagues sides i know that nothing compares to the feeling of the hearing the final whistle go and celebrating the win with your mates.. You don’t know when you will get that feeling again… enjoy the build up and start thinking about your game and how you are going to personally contribute to the success on Saturday.

Everyone on the sidelines can you please make sure you are proudly wearing your colleagues gear to support the boys. Looking across and seeing a passionate crowd of colleagues supporters will help the boys lift in the game.

Just another reminder that beers will be on upstairs in the backroom of the Woollahra Hotel on Saturday night. All players and supporters welcome to get involved in what will be an awesome night!

And finally for the playing group, we will be having our end of season beers at the BGS clubhouse at 12pm sharp on Sunday. Its called “no undie sunday” for a reason… you have been warned.

Preliminary Finals

Burke & Judd Through to Grand Final

With one week of semi finals completed, Colleagues have secured Grand Final spots for their Burke and Judd Cup sides. All Colleagues sides played in semi final matches last Saturday at the David Phillips Field in Daceyville.

Unfortunately our Colties fell short in their knock out match against Petersham 14 – 10 and our Sutherland, Whiddon and Kentwell Cup sides went down to Mosman in their respective major semi finals. Thankfully those grades sides get a second bite at the cherry this weekend in the preliminary semi finals.

Knock out Rugby for Colleagues

Knock out rugby faces three Colleagues sides this weekend. Kentwell will take on Balmain, Whiddon will play Petersham and our Sutherland side will go up against the familiar faces of the Sydney Convicts.

3:15pm – Kentwell – Colleagues v Balmain
11:05am – Whiddon – Colleagues v Petersham
9:00am – Halligan – Colleagues 5ths v Convicts

Vale – Holoua Tonga of Balmain

It is with terrible sadness that we are passing on the news that Balmain’s Kentwell Cup player Holoua Tonga passed away on Wednesday morning after a motocycle accident on the way to work.

Holoau is seen here being clapped off the field following Balmain’s Kentwell Cup win over Drummoyne last Saturday.

On behalf of the Colleagues Rugby community we pass on our deepest condolences to Holoua’s family, friends and club mates at Balmain.

The Manatee Mumble

Giants!

Here we are for the second week of finals, for the guys that are playing this weekend this is your opportunity to dig deep for a place in the Grand Final. Grand Final matches do not come around often and I would love nothing more than to see Colleagues teams dominate next weeks game program. For those playing its potentially the last game for 2016… really start to think about the importance of this game and farking start to switch on now.. i can’t wait to get out there!

Congratulations to the sides that have made it through to the GF, opportunity to rest up this week and please head back down to David Phillips and cheer the rest of the boys that are playing.

Also a shout out to the Colties for an awesome effort last week for pulling up just short of a larger Petersham side. It was great to watch the fight in these young colleagues and we were nearly there. That blindside winger coming across to score the try was awesome to watch! The rest of the club should take note!!

Cheers,

The Manatee

Last Saturday’s wins by the Colleagues lower grades and colts over Mosman were enough to secure the 2016 Bruce Graham Shield and make the Blue Giants back to back Club Champs.
Colleagues had fight hard all day against the Whales who have been a formidable club in 2016.
At the end of last Saturday Colleagues ended up on 2,589 Club Championship points, 194 ahead of Mosman and 630 ahead of Petersham.
Testament to the strength of both clubs, Colleagues and Mosman will face off in four of the five senior grade semi-finals tomorrow at the David Phillips Field.

Welcome to finals footy!

Congratulations guys for winning the club championship and making it into the finals!! To have all grades involved in finals is a testament to the strength of the club. Unfortunately this means that other clubs have the advantage of staking their grades so be prepared to come up against opposition that you have not faced in the regular season. These games are always tough but I am confident that we have the depth to be able to weather storm and be playing at the end of August!
