Finals Week 2 and Halligan 3-peat

Halligan Cup and Finals Week 1 recap

The highlight of the season to date came around 7pm last Saturday night as our 6th grade side raised the Halligan Cup for the 3rd year in a row!

In damp and cold conditions, the lads weathered a first half storm from King’s Old Boys who went into the break 6-0 up after playing a physical brand of footy.

Colleagues’ task was made even tougher having received a yellow card in the first half and a red in the second, but the boys fought back strongly in front of a raucus Blue Giant support crew that had gathered at the end northern end of the ground.

After building plenty of pressure in the second half it was inevitable the KOBs defence would eventually break and halfback Pete Minucos managed to dive over for two matchwinning tries from close range to cap a great night under lights for Colleagues.

Earlier in the day, our Barbour Cup colts side continued their unbeaten season as they beat Mosman 33-19 on the way to the Grand Final where they will look to be the first premiership winning colts since the Jack Williams-led side of 2015.

Burke Cup produced the other highlight of the day as they put in their best performance of the year to beat Waverley 25-7 and progress to a preliminary final against Mosman this week. After a close loss to Mosman a month ago, Dingo and the boys will be out for revenge.

Judd Cup and Sutherland Cup suffered narrow losses but due to their strong performances all year they have been rewarded with another chance this weekend against Waverley.

All games will be played at David Phillips Field so get out and support the lads!

Finals Week 1 and Halligan GF under lights

Finals Week 1

This week sees BurkeBarbourJudd and Sutherland at David Phillips Field for week 1 of the finals, while Halligan take on King’s Old Boys in the Halligan Cup final – 6pm at Woollahra Oval No.1 (Easts).

We’d love to see a huge crowd get down to Easts to support our Halligans boys as they look to secure the club’s second piece of silverware for the year and complete historic three-peat premiership wins.

We will be opening up the Colleagues clubhouse for Happy Hour from 3:30-6pm for pre-match beers and to watch the Shute Shield final before we head over to Easts – get down and support the lads!

With Barbour, Judd and Sutherland all up against Mosman in 1v2 clashes at David Phillips Field it’s set to be a huge day of footy, while Burke are looking for revenge against Waverley after a loss three weeks ago.

Game times are outlined below.

Blue Mountains recap

It was a physical day at the foot of the mountains to round out the season and it’s fair to say the boys enjoyed a few well-earned beers on the bus trip home.

Colleagues claimed hard-fought victories in BurkeBarbourJudd and Sutherland.

Whiddon Cup fell agonisingly short via a last-minute Blue Mountains penalty goal, despite half the team being filled by colties who stepped up to the plate in the absence of a number of regulars.

Kenwtwell came up against a strong Blue Mountains side who will no doubt be a force in the upcoming finals series.

As mentioned, Halligan are off to the final after a dominant semi final victory over Lindfield. The boys have looked sharp in training this week and are primed for a big performance under lights this Saturday!

Round 14 v Blue Mountains Posh Tour

Balmain recap

Colleagues claimed another Blue Rinse for 2019, admittedly with some assistance from Balmain who registered forfeits in WhiddonJuddSutherland and Barbour.

Nonetheless it was a great day down at Blue Giants Stadium with a vocal crowd in attendance to witness two commanding performances from Burke and Kentwell.

Burkies ran out 107-6 victors, with a number of boys taking the opportunity to get off the nudie run for the year – including the ManateeMark Blackmore who snuck on the field to notch a try ahead of his final game for Colleagues this weekend.

Blacky has been a Colleagues legend for a number of years and it was a fitting way for the great man to finish his BGS career. Let’s hope the boys can produce one last victory this weekend before the Manatee heads north to Newcastle.

Burke’s big win win locks up 4th spot on the ladder for them and takes the pressure off against 5th-placed Blue Mountains this weekend.

Kentwell also claimed a resounding victory, running in 8 tries to record a 46-11 win.

Young colt, Jonty White, scored a try in his Kentwell debut off the bench while Cammie Burnhill notched up his 11th meat pie of the season to move into top spot in the club’s try scoring ranks.

This week all 5 grades and colts are in action as we head off on the anual Posh Bus Tour to the Blue Mountains for our last regular season round.

There’s plenty to play for with Judd looking to secure a top 2 spot, while BurkeBarbour and Sutherland are also looking for strong performances leading into finals.

Elsewhere, Halligan will be taking on Lindfield at Lyne Park in their semi final. The boys have been the best performing team all year, qualifying 1st, and will be looking to lock up a spot in the final so they can make it back-to-back premierships. Good luck fellas!

A special shoutout also to our Sydney Convicts brothers who celebrate their 15-year anniversary this weekend withtwo home games. It’s a great achievement and hopefully it will be celebrated with a coupla wins!

Round 13 v Balmain

Waverley recap

It was a tough day at the office for Colleagues against local rivals Waverley last weekend.

Sutherland Cup and Barbour Cup (via forfeit) claimed the Blue Giants’ only victories for the day as the club came up against a very determined Waverley outfit.

Judd Cup suffered a close one-point loss, while Whiddon went down by one try.

Burke and Kentwell, perhaps distracted by the Ladies Day festivities, went down to strong Waverley sides.

Unfortuantely, most of the club will have to wait another week for revenge, with Balmain forfeiting all but 1st and 2nd grade.

Make sure you get down an support the lads in our last home game of 2019.

The rest of the boys will be chomping at the bit next week as the posh bus tour makes its way to Blue Mountains for the first time in years.

Round 12 v Waverley and Ladies Day

Mosman recap

It was a tough day at the office for Colleagues over the bridge, but the Blue Giants showed enough positive signs to suggest Ladies Day #2 is likely to be another success on and off the park.

After a well-deserved week off, our top-ranked Halligan side are preparing for a huge Ladies Day top-of-the-table clash against Menai, who are so far unbeaten this season. It will be a step up in class for the Blue Giants, who are expecting a physical game from Menai’s big boppas.

Last Saturday Sutherland Cup boys got the day off to a flying start as they notched up a 21-7 victory, which cements their spot in the top 2 on the ladder.

Judd Cup bounced back from a poor game against Waverley to hold 1st-placed Mosman scoreless on the way to a 14-0 victory. Supercoach Loz once again demonstrated his ability to get the most out of the next generation of young talent as several colties starred in their Judd debut.

Whiddon Cup suffererd a tough 19-17 loss which puts their season on the line against second-placed Waverley this weekend. The boys welcome back some heavy-hitters in the backline in what is sure to be a cracking match.

Barbour Cup continued their unbeaten year, coming from 14-7 down to win 33-14 over second-placed Mosman. With the two sides head and shoulders above the rest of the competition, this was an important psychological victory for Colleagues as they prepare to face Mosman twice in the finals series.

Burke Cup suffered a heartbreaking loss, falling 4 points short courtesy of a late Mosman try. With Mosman in first place on the ladder, the strong Colleagues performance bodes well as they welcome back some big names in the lead up to finals.

Kentwell jumped out to a blistering 17-0 lead, playing beautiful running rugby against a much bigger and more fancied side. Despite showing further promise, Colleagues was unable to hold on as Mosman showed against their 2nd-placed opponents.

Player to Watch – Tim McCutcheon

This week’s player to watch is Tim McCutcheon, with thanks to bronze sponsor Mad Hatter Wine Co.

Conspicuous in his absence for most of the first 11 rounds, the barnstorming centre makes a convenient Ladies Day return for Whiddon Cup this week.

The former Kentwell superstar will be looking to help the Knight Riders knock off Waverley and earn themselves a top 4 spot leading into the finals.

Round 9 v Mosman (Rescheduled)

Round 11 recap v Petersham

It was a mixed day at the office for Colleagues against Petersham, with 3 wins from 5 games while the colts fixture was postponed.

Sutherland Cup once again got the day off to a flying start as they notched up a 22-0 victory. A number of colts players stepped up to fill gaps in the side created by the long European Summer, with Scott Miller and Toby Dickinson among the standouts.

Judd Cup paid for some sloppy errors as they went down 19-5 and they’ll need to bounce back quickly to overcome the top-ranked Mosman this weekend.

Whiddon Cup put in one of their sharpest performances of the year as the forwards, led by the weary-looking bash brothers Charles Macdonald and Richard Harvey, laid an excellent platform to build off.

The Knight Riders will be looking for a similarly strong performance this week – win and they move into the top 4, lose and they could drop as low as 7th – such is the closeness of the 3rd grade competition this year.

Burke Cup nudged themselves back into the top 4 (with a game in hand) after a hard fought 17-12 win, thanks in large part to a hattrick from inside centre Sean Walsh.

Once again the colties stepped up and performed well in Burke with Harry Todd and Sam Williamsanchoring the scrum alongside colts coach Ed Nankivell. Burke will need to put in a strong performance to overcome Mosman who have lost just the one match this year.

Kentwell ran into a red-hot Petersham side who showed why they’re the defending champs. All is not lost for the top grade, with strong performances from some of the more inexperienced members of the side pointing to positive signs ahead.

Over at Boronia Park, Halligans continued the fine form that sees them sit atop of the ladder as they ran out 29-7 victors over Hunters Hill. Julian Hoefflin bagged a double for Colleagues and the side will now enjoy a well-earned week off.

Round 11 v Petersham

Round 10 recap v Knox

After a couple of weeks without footy, the Blue Giants claimed valuable championship points as we took on Knox at home last Saturday.

Halligans put in a dominant display to dispatch Mosman 7ths 43-0 in the first match of the day, which was followed by Sutherland facing off against the unbeaten Mosman 6ths (representing Knox) in a top-of-the-table clash

Colleagues put in a strong performance as each side scored two tries apiece, however Mosman ultimately prevailed 14-10.

In what is the most closely-fought grade in the competition, Whiddon suffered a narrow loss to first-placed Knox 8-5. With just two wins separating second and seventh place, Colleagues are still right in the hunt and will be look to knock off 5th-placed Petersham this Saturday.

With bash brothers Richard Harvey and Chuck MacDonald set to start together in the backrow for the first time this season, Petersham are in for a long day at the office.

The highlights of the day came in Barbour, Burke and Kentwell – with all three lodging bonus point wins and important club championship points.

Both Kentwell and Burke had ground out close wins against Knox in the first round fixture but the boys from the north shore were no match for the Blue Giants this time around.

Kentwell claimed a 34-10 victory which included six tries, while Burke piled on 43 points as James Lovell and Giles Widdicomb both picked up doubles.

Both sides will be looking to maintain the momentum against Petersham this weekend.

Round 10 v Knox Old Boys

Round 10 Knox at Home

With a few must wins before we enjoy the cocktail party The Giants will have their work cut pout for them against Knox.

Burke welcome club tough guy Jack Williams (pictured) to steer the ship at halfback. Widdon will be guided by our hardy and experienced back rower Charles McDonald in his debut leading the team.

Judd are without a game this week due to a lack of numbers up at Knox and Barbour will need to grit out a tough game being light on with most of their counterparts away for the uni break.

Kentwell are looking to get their season back on track this weekend against Knox at home after consecutive losses.

The boys have been training well and look primed to put on a complete performance, something that has been evading the team thus far this season. The combination of experience in the form of veterans Will “Gazelle running from a hungry lion” Crutchley and extreme veteran Dan “Hips” Kelly, have been working well during the week.

Halligan and Suthos are getting games against Mosman 6th and 7th grades.

It’s a big game for all grades tomorrow, and there’s no better place to be on this planet than on the sidelines as the shadows grow, tin in hand, in full voice cheering on those Magnificent Men as they tear Knox apart.

Wet Weather Weekend

Round 8 recap v Drummoyne

Colleagues was as expected up against strong outfits it in the higher grades against Drummoyne last Saturday and came away triumphant in BarbourJudd and Suthos.

Babour have continued their dominant form throughout the season, adding another win to their unblemished record. Putting sworn enemies Drummoyne to the sword 60-nil. What was especially heartening from the boys is that due to some injuries to key players in grade a lot of the colts where called up to play for Grade.

19 Colts played in grade against Drummoyne from 1st to 5th grade! With a large chunk of colties also making the pilgrimage drink in the rich history of Europe this effort across the whole club is unreal.

The Burke boys made a gutsy effort however, Drummoyne were too classy for winning 31-14. The game showed great signs for the future as the boys are ready for the physical confrontation later on in the season. As the year progresses and players recover from injuries and start to focus finals footy the outlook good for the Burke boys.

The key here (and for all grades) is getting blokes healthy and on the paddock and we will soon emerge at the top of the ladder.

Highlights throughout the Burke game included Hamish Sheehan with his first crack in grade had a fantastic game and look incredibly dangerous with ball in hand. Other notable performances came from Liam Nichols impact off the bench a massive competitor that made his presence felt a soon as he stepped on the ground. Jack “Thunder” Hale also put his hand up for the tough carries in attack and also was effective in defence.

It was a tough weekend from Suthos through to Kentwell, hopefully round 8 marks a turning point in the season!

Chase The Chook

This Saturday Colleagues will benefit from a week to rest the bodies, a few teams are doing captains runs down at BGS to make up for a lack of training during the week.

The main event for Saturday is a game of ‘Chase the Chook’ starting at the Bellvue at 1pm. Great initiative from Lachie Piggot and Nanks for organising whats set to be a pissa arvo.

Important we get some good bonding in to help out all teams gell now we’ve penetrated the back end of the season.

Each week we’ll reveal some of the rumours, gossip and garbage that has slid its way into Win Diesel’s DMs.

From: Pete Minucos
To: Winston Bradley

Hey matey,

Just wanted to shoot you a quick email about the game coming up. I know you’re typically a 10 but I think I’m going to select you in the front row this week. I think that will make us more dynamic.

Also, I noticed the boys are a bit confused about the game plan. I can’t make training this week – there’s a cracking kennel on at Wentworth Park I’m going to have a punt on. Can you just remind the boys that our game plan is to play all the way to the edge but stay in the middle keeping nice and wide but remaining tight and moving the ball quickly about the ruck? It’s a simple strategy so they should pick it up quickly.

Righto mate that’s all. Make sure you get down to the ground early on Saturday cause I’ll be late.

Cheers

Minu

Round 8 v Drummoyne

Round 7 recap v Blue Mountains

Colleagues came back strongly after the bye weekend, posting wins in six out of our eight games – including our first silverware for 2019 in the Radford Cup.

Burke Cup played their best football of the year, running riot over a Blue Mountains side who were above them on the ladder heading into the match.

Tom Mullany led the side around the park expertly, while Will Crutchley was the commander of the forward pack as the team ran away to a 62-0 victory – setting the standard as the competition enters its second stage.

Drummoyne feature in the top 2 of both Burke and Ketnwell so this coming weekend is set to be a real litmus test for the top grades.

Whiddon picked up a gritty 8-0 over Blue Mountains, who had led the competition until that point. With just 8 competition points separating 1st and 7th on the ladder, this was an important win for Colleagues who sit just outside the top 4 but have a chance to claim top spot this weekend.

Judd and Barbour continued their strong recent form with convincing victories, while Sutherland won via forfeit and Halligans went down in a tough match to King’s Old Boys.

Radford Cup Final

The highlight of the round was undoubtedly our Colts II side who faced off with Mosman in the Radford Plate final.

Played under lights at Rawson Oval in the pouring rain, the match had all the ingredients for an ambush.

However, the young Colleagues men rose to the occasion as they played with more endeavour and skill despite the tough conditions.

The side was brilliantly led by captain Stu McLean and a committed forward pack, while Charlie Gulliver marshalled the backline around the park in atrocious conditions.

Special mention must go to all the Blue Giant supporters who made the trek over the bridge to ensure we outnumbered the Mosman sideline contingent who were huddled in the comfort of the clubhouse.

David Gooch and Jon Ryan in particular have been the cornerstones of the 2019 Radford Cup campaign, supporting the boys from Wollongong to Chatswood and everywhere in between.

Diesel’s DMs

Each week we’ll reveal some of the rumours, gossip and garbage that has slid its way into Win Diesel’s DMs.

From: A Colleagues Old Boy
To: Winston Bradley

Hello mate,

This is my first ‘DM’.

I would just like some clarification around the following, what does ‘DM’ stand for?

Who is Diesel?

And what happened to us being able to drink out of class schooners in the clubhouse!?

Your prompt response would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Old Boy

Hey Cuz,

Great to be back in the baby blue this weekend.

Not going to lie, an indulgent trip to Europe and a heap of indoor P.E. classes have left me a few stone heavier than your average creek bed..

I’m hoping for a heap of minutes tomorrow – and please tell the coaches I’m happy to stay in the front row.

Also, I heard there’s some kid Jack Lamph playing Kentwell tomorrow – he’s probably young enough to be DK’s kid! Ha!

See ya tomorrow.

As we reach the halfway mark of the season, it’s a good time to check in on The Bellevue Hotel spend leaderboard to see who Colleagues’ biggest grogsmen are.

In what will come as a shock to absolutely nobody, Ed Nankivell aka Nank the Tank is leading the charge in first place.

Veteran VB-destroyer Dan Kelly is nipping at his heels, while Sunday specialists Jack Williams and Jack King also feature among the top 10.

With a number of coaches featuring prominently, one can only imagine the brains trust have spent many long hours at the pub pouring over game film and strategising for upcoming matches.

A special mention must go to the Suthos boys, whose bye-round team lunch helped make a significant dent in our targets.

This leaderboard will be updated weekly for the rest of the season with prizes up for grabs to those who perform well.

Don’t forget to swipe your cards with every purchase at The Bellevue and The Oak and if you haven’t received a card, come and see the boys behind the bar at Colleagues on Saturday.
