Round 7 v Blue Mountains & Radford Cup Final

Round 7 v Blue Mountains

After enjoying a bye over the long weekend, Colleagues will play host to Division 1 new boys Blue Moutains tomorrow.

Blue Mountains have made a strong start to the season, featuring in the top 4 of Kentwell, Burke and Whiddon Cup.

Meanwhile, Colleagues is coming off a confidence-boosting Blue RInse at Balmain two weeks ago as we continue to build into the season at the halfway mark.

With the European summer and Uni exams in full swing, there are a number of new faces making their debuts up the grades this week, as well as some returning club legends.

Joe Sangster makes his starting return to Kentwell after showing impressive form in Burke since overcoming a long-term injury.

Among those joining him are Alex Hamilton and Justin Stewart, who are the latest graduates from Ed Nankivell’s colts factory to make their debut in the top grade this year.

In Burke Cup, Will Crutchley makes a welcome return to the second row while dashing young colt Jack Ridley is also stepping up from Barbour Cup to take his spot on the wing.

Whiddon, Judd and Sutherland also feature a number of new faces and we wish all the boys good luck on what is set to be a cracking day of footy at BGS.

Radford Cup Final

Colleagues’ 3 colts sides have been among the top performers each week over the first couple of months of the season.

This weekend sees the conclusion of the Radford Cup competition, which has featured our Radford I and Radford II sides.

Due to a quirk of the draw, the Colleagues sides played two less games than their opponents yet both managed to qualify 3rd and 4th respectively.

The end result is Radford I will face off against Mosman at 6:30pm this coming Saturday night in the Plate Final.

The boys will be out to prove they deserved their rightful place in the major final as they head over the bridge to face a tough Mosman side in front of a large home crowd.

Any support from across the grades would be much appreciated as we look to secure our first silverware for the year!

Round 6 v Balmain preview – Waverley recap

Round 5 recap v Waverley

It was a largely positive day for Colleagues at Waverley, as the club emerged with 5 wins from 7 matches.

In what may prove to be a turning point in their season, Kentwell capped off a strong second half with a 24-15 win over a typically physical Waverley side.

Man of the match Cammie Burnhill sealed the win late in the second half with a blistering runaway try after a Pocock-esque pilfer from supersub Ed Nankivell, who made his return to the top grade after several years out with injury.

Burke and Whiddon suffered tough losses, while Judd continued their run of close wins with a 6-5 victory over a dogged Waverley.

5th and 6th grade registered comfortable wins to coninue their strong recent form.

The colts cemented their place atop the Barbour Cup standings with a 90-0 victory. Replacement halfback Sam Campbell scored a second half hat trick, which puts him in a tie for first place on the Barbour Cup tryscorers list.

Radford I and Radford II ensured it was a blue rinse for the colties with wins against Sydney University IV and Burraneer respectively.

With just one round robin fixture left in Radford Cup, Colleagues is well placed to have two sides representing the club in the finals.

Round 6 Match Times

Diesel’s DMs

Each week we’ll reveal some of the rumours, gossip and garbage that has slid its way into Win Diesel’s DMs.

To: Winston Bradley
From: Tim Moore

Hey mate, been thinking a bit more about the Suthos team structure. There’s a fair bit of key player risk with me running the show at 9.

I’m planning on grooming up a colt to be my successor in case something were to happen to me.. you know they could shadow me for a few weeks, maybe pick up the odd shift at QGS and just get a feel for what it’s like to walk in my shoes (pretty bloody good).

Might run it by Brista over a few Jager Bombs at the Oak, what you reckon?

To: Winston Bradley
From: Cammie Burnhill

You alright bruv?

You know how all the guys have been giving me a bit of curry about the weekly haircut before every game? I just want to put it out there that maybe we should make it more of a club tradition rather than a payout… it’s right embarassin’ running onto the field next to all these scissor cuts.

And to be fair, I’ve been scoring tries at a rate similar to George North in 2012 so maybe everyone could jump on board – just sayin.

Player Profile: Tom Borowski

Enabling us to go behind the curtains and get to see another side of our heroes, here at Blue Giants TV, we have been lucky enough to get a sit down scoop with Kentwell backrower – Tom Borowski.

Name: Thomas Derek George Greg Borowski.

Where is your hometown: That’s a good question and depends who I’m talking too if im honest.

What do you mean: Well mate if im spinning bulk yarns with bushies I’m born and bred Coonamble cobba! However if I’m out and about in Sydney and talking with the Eastern suburbs elite or a foreign sheila down at Bondi, I live in the leafy suburbs of Double Breezy (Double Bay) and work at the great Establishment of Rabobank.

How would you describe your day to day fashion sense: Well that’s a great question but basically I’m a hip operator that is always in style. To give you an example I started the trend of bucket hats, white loafers and teeth whitening in Orange where I went to school. Thanks to me there are still Kinross boys getting around in the deadly white loafers and Oakley sunglass combination. At the moment though I have settled in a country chic vibe and I’m really tryng to express the maturity I know feel in my life!

You look like you look after yourself, how do you stay in shape: Mate I’m on a combonation of diets and they are doing wonders for me! Mostly during the week I live off my go to staple of tuna tins soaked in a deliscious Italian olive oil mixed with a combination of mouthwatering spinach and plain brown rice. It keeps me in peak physical condition as well as completely underwhelmed.

You mentioned a couple of diets?: Ohhh yeah well about Friday night out around 5.45 when the Raab (Rabobank) lets us out the door, I basically just give up eating until Sunday arvo. Basically I live off a diet of Victoria Bitter and rum and cokes, I have always been known to have a bit of a sweet tooth. I continue this until around 6am Sunday Morning. I then order my go-to UberEats on a Sunday… Guzzy Gomez chicken cali burrito with the lot, a serving of nachos, 3 churros with caramel sauce and 2 cans of coke zero (healthy option lol).

Well you look great, its really working for you: Cheers cob.

Mate that’s just all we have time for any last minute advice for the punters: Don’t count your chickens before they hatch…. I did that once and then my dog Sandy ate a heap of the eggs, so I had way less chickens than I thought.

Round 5 v Waverley

Local Derby – Round 5 v Waverley

This week we’re heading down the road to take on Waverley across all six grades and colts.

Get down and support the lads on what is set to be a cracking Autumn day.

Round 4 recap v Petersham

As is often the case on Ladies Day, Colleagues was blessed with larger than usual matchday squads which helped the Blue Giants claim victory in 5 of the 6 grades plus colts.

After bursting out of the sheds to the sound of AC/DC, Sutherland Cup put in a clinical performance to get the day off to a cracking start with a 38-0 victory.

The next three games were much closer, with Judd Cup edging out an 8-7 victory before Whiddon prevailed 22-12 and Burke 14-0.

Keeping the shammies scoreless was no doubt particularly pleasing for the Burke Cup coaching staff whose methods have raised eyebrows across the subbies rugby scene in recent weeks.

The results speak for themselves and Burke are now closing in on 4th place Waverley on the ladder, setting the scene for an enthralling battle this weekend.

Kentwell suffered a frustrating loss to the defending premiers with countless turnovers cruelling the home side’s chances.

Over on Woollahra No.3, the Barbour Cup colts continued their strong start to the year with a 57-0 victory over their 3rd place opponents. This week also marked the conclusion of the Rawson Cup college competition with a number of Blue Giants featuring in the victorious St Andrew’s side against St Paul’s.

Elsewhere, Radford I lost to Easts 4th colts thanks to a last minute try and conversion, while Radford II narrowly went down to Mosman’s 2nd colts after they spent much of the second half with 13 men.

Halligan continued their strong start to the season with a 34-0 win over Convicts 2s.

Diesel’s DMs

Each week we’ll reveal some of the rumours, gossip and garbage that has slid its way into Win Diesel’s DMs.

This week we have an excerpt fresh out of the inbox:

From: Jack Hale
To: Winston Bradley

Hey Diesel – trust you’re well. What a ripper ladies day we had – almost my favourite day of the year man lol. Probably never going to score a meaty in front of that many chicks ever again huh..

Anyway just want to ask your opinion about this girl. She grabbed my hand during ‘Hey Jude’ and looked at me like a girl has never done before.. What should I do? Just haven’t felt like this about someone before. See you at training this week I’ll tell you her name then hehe.

Cheers

In other news, after 8 years of service to Colleagues the Taylor Twins have racked up their 100th game for the club. Unless they’ve played the exact same amount of games since 2011, it’s hard to verify exactly who it is out of the elusive pair that we can now call a centurion given their aesthetic similarities. Regardless, good onya fellas you deserve every accolade.

And in some late mail to the inbox:

From: Damon Holmes
To: Winston Bradley

Mate just a quick one about ladies day – sorry I couldn’t make it I was up in Norf Queensland with work chasing a few big micky bulls and wrangling a few bunyips ;P.

You wouldn’t believe it but there was a Barra caught in me mum’s drain pipe that ded-set wouldnta fit into one of Goochie’s red jersey bags!

… anyways I heard Jack Hale Storm fell in love at ladies day (again) ha – what a fairy bred aye!

Player Profile: Chris Knight

Enabling us to go behind the curtains and get to see another side of our heroes, here at Blue Giants TV, we have been lucky enough to get a sit down scoop with the spiritual leader of the Knight Riders – Chris Knight.

Name: Chris Knight

Nicknames: Knightsy, the Nightmare, Oiiiii Knightsy, Bealemin, KB, chief Pug, Kurtley Pugglesworth

Position: Whiddon aka the “Knight Riders” Backs coach and retired diesel mechanic

Years at Colleagues: 5

Occupation: Big swinging Lawyer. I am basically the Lewis Litt of Insurance Litigation. I have also been known to be an avid trophy enthusiast and amateur sculptor – most notably with my unorthodox techniques for testing the durability of the Judd Cup Trophy in 2015 at Sproatsy’s place.

Strengths: Crossfit guru, oversized triceps, coca-cola consumption which I drink by the litre, passing right to left.

Weaknesses: Direct sunlight, bumblebees, crusaders number one fan, passing left to right, and the fact I look like I have had a thousand Schoeey Schoeey moimoi’s when I am sober. During one game at St Pats I had the ref pull me over and request an HIA.

Words to live by: ‘MAAAAATTTTTEEE – if in doubt, get it out’

Prediction for year ahead: After a disappointing season for the Knight Riders in 2018, between myself and Bunson aka Bobby Axelrod, I think the lads are fizzed up to have a real crack this year and get themselves back into finals footy by playing a brand of real high risk, high reward Whiddon code. It all starts this weekend against our local rivals the Waverley British and Irish lions. Looking forward to seeing all you roosts down there post game for a can of Doctor.

Round 4 v Petersham – Ladies Day 1 and Sponsors Day

Round 4 v Petersham

This week we’re at home against Petersham, with the fixture doubling as both our first Ladies Day of the year and Sponsors Day.

We look forward to seeing a good crowd down at Blue Giants Stadium for some cracking Autumn footy.

Round 3 recap v Knox

The trip across the bridge was a fruitful one for Colleagues, as we returned with victories in four of the six matches.

Judd staged a second-half comeback after some ‘words of encouragement’ at halftime to claim a victory that moves them into the top 4.

Burke also rallied to claim their first victory of the season over a difficult Knox side.

The Barbour Cup colts side continued their dominant start to the season with a resounding 47-10 scoreline despite being forced into a backline reshuffle after early injuries.

The colts tight five continues to impress with a dominant scrum and slick lineout enabling second rower Sam Ridley to nab two tries in a commanding performance.

In a thrilling Kentwell match, Colleagues scored a late try to claim a 33-28 win – putting a dampener on the home side’s Ladies Day festivities.

Tom Borowski was particularly strong for the Blue Giants, while Dan Kelly steered the side around the park brilliantly from no.10.

Elsewhere, Radford I were able to celebrate on the return leg of their annual trip to Wollongong Uni after claiming a 34-24 win, while Halligans beat Epping 50-5.

Match Times – Round 4

Diesel’s DMs

Each week we’ll reveal some of the rumours, gossip and garbage that has slid its way into Win Diesel’s DMs.

This week is a special Ladies Day edition as we canvass the rumours surrounding some of the club’s most eligible bachelors.

One such player is Jon Condon, brother of Lachlan, who formerly plied his trade at Old Iggies. Rumour has it Jon may have over-indulged following new players night on Thursday. It’s never easy establishing yourself at a new club, nor finding your way out of your brother’s shadow, but I dare say there are less painful ways to do it than running into shoulders and the door of the BoHo.

Another of the club’s dashing young blondes is Hugh ‘4-years-a-colt’ Beith. Diesel’s DMs has been informed the Radford talisman is recently back on the market and was spotted at the Grose during the week with a rum draught in one hand and his phone in the other. Let’s hope he has more luck on the left wing against Easts this weekend.

Perennial Ladies Day favourite Tom Borowski will be another vying for Colleagues’ most eligible bachelor when he takes the field for Kentwell this weekend. With his Harley Davidson and chiselled physique, Tom’s recently-single status has resulted in an 89% uplift in pre-sales for this year’s event.

While not necessarily an eligible bachelor per se, the Sutherland Cup Ladies Day Legends will definitely be a group to watch come Saturday. Blessed with the enviable kick-off time of 11am, these boys take it upon themselves to drive the club’s off field standards throughout the year. This is never more evident than at Ladies Day where – under the leadership of Ben AbrahamsCampbell Brister and Red Dog – the Suthos boys take it to another level after Benny’s 1pm rev up in the visitors changeroom.

That’s all for this week. Looking forward to a cracking day tomorrow at Sydney’s original Ladies Day.

Player Profile: Joe Yeomans

Enabling us to go behind the curtains and get to see another side of our heroes, here at Blue Giants TV, we have been lucky enough to get a sit down scoop with the leader of our colts brigade – Joe Yeomans.

Name: Joe Yeomans

Nicknames: Smiling Assassin or Fly. They call me fly because I’m pretty fly for a white guy.

Position: No 8 and captain of the Barbour breds. Some say that I fell into the job because Robin Allen did his ACL but all that matters is the big C is next to my name.

Years at Colleagues: 2

Occupation: Concreter. Some call me a concrete cowboy but that’s an absolute yarn, I’m a born and bred Walgett boy with a point to prove. Concrete runs through my right shoulder so don’t run at it if you don’t want an appointment with the rugby gods.

Likes: Ripping my shirt off at least once a day whether its on site with the boys, in the library reading one of my favourite books, just round the house with big bro Ned and my pasty bash brother Jack Lamph, or heading off to Chookies pick up a burg. Sometimes I rip the lid off when I’m out to dinner with my parents. If you’re blessed with a rig like mine you must flaunt it! I also like dropping at least one ball a game, just to keep all other pretenders on their toes. I absolutely froth an unders line, I dare you to try and stop me 5m out running an unders line!

Dislikes: I absolutely hate it when fly halves pass the ball league style as they know I find it hard to catch any pass other than a tight spiral thrown by Gibbo or Benny Miller. I hate any place that doesn’t let a young fella rip his shirt off in public, like trains, buses, ladies toilets etc.

Favourite meal: Whales, nothing is more satisfying than dining on the meat of a freshly killed Mosman whale. Their meat is sweet and juicy!

Words to live by: ‘Everyday is ladies day!’

Diesel’s DMs

Each week we’ll reveal some of the rumours, gossip and garbage that has slid its way into Win Diesel’s DMs.

James “Parking” Lott has been spotted telling new players around the club he’s the first bloke to go straight from colts to Kentwell since mentor and master man-manager Ed Nankivell many moons ago. While the accuracy of this claim is questionable, there is no doubting the big fella’s Brad Thorn-esque attributes have been welcomed into the top grade.

Lotty’s swagger around the club is matched only by that of young Lachlan Bernays, whose newfound confidence apparently stems from several late-night excursions to St Andrew’s College. My spies tell me Bernays was seen arriving at Drew’s around 9:15pm last Friday before leaving at 9:19pm with a huge grin and a few missing buttons. Marathon effort that, congratulations Lachy – the club is proud of you.

Elsewhere, Diesel’s DMs was pleased to see Tom “Donk” Mullany make his return for Whiddon Cup after a few years away from the Blue Giants. Rumours that the bubbler will also be returning with Donk to BGS are yet to be confirmed.

Finally, a special Diesel’s DMs shout out must go to Joey Sangster who makes his starting return this week after a year out with injury. Throughout this time our DMs have been inundated with messages of concern from Joe’s fans – never fear ladies, that beautiful smile is back in time for Ladies Day.

Player Profile: Ollie Cowley

Enabling us to go behind the curtains and get to see another side of our heroes, here at Blue Giants TV, we have been lucky enough to get a sit down scoop with the bookie’s favourite – Ollie Cowley.

When approached by our reporters about a potential interview, Ollie replied “yeah yeah just one sec, about to watch this race”.

Name: Oliver Bet Fred Cowley

Nicknames: Zone, O Zone, Crowley, Punter, Chosen One

Position: Captain, 10, 15, 9 (but my talents are wasted there)

Years at Colleagues: Four

Something you don’t know about me: Had a recent run in with a larger opponent resulting in a rhinoplasty procedure in the offseason – they say you can’t improve what’s perfect but my new head would suggest otherwise.

Strengths: Rugby (obviously). Punting. Inhaling my juul. Organising games of golf with 6 different people then not showing up for any of them.

Weaknesses: Punting. Inhaling my juul. Organising games of golf with 6 different people then not showing up for any of them.

Early season prediction: Was lucky enough to make my Kentwell debut off the bench against the Dirty Reds in the first trial, so keen to get a few more minutes – show the coaches what I can do.

It’s nice to be playing grade this year. The colts coaches couldn’t get the best out of me last year and a lot of the younger blokes struggled to capitalise on my brilliance.

I’ve heard DK is on his last legs so if I bide my time I should be leading Kentwell soon enough.

Long Lunch & Old Colleagues Day recap

Over 180 friends of Colleagues gathered for a hugely successful Long Lunch last Friday at Doltone House.

The lunch was brilliantly MC’d by Toby Lawson, while Justin Harrison and Owen Finegan were in fine form as they went toe-to-toe with stories from their playing careers.

The two Wallaby greats held court and were happy to divulge some state secrets from the Brumbies glory years.

Following the lunch, the crowd kicked on to Verandah Bar to round out what was a great day.

Saturday was Old Colleagues Day at Woollahra No.2 with a number of former players getting down to watch 11 Colleagues teams take the field.

The bouncy castle was a hit with the young ones while the old boys recounted past glories over a few beers and nibbles.

All up it was a great weekend – thanks to all those who got involved and showed their support for the club.
