Round 2 vs Drummoyne

Blues Giants v Dirty Reds

Round 2 of the 2016 season sees the Blue Giants heading out to the inner west to take on the Dirty Reds. A formidable club over the years, Drummoyne will no doubt be looking to deliver much of the same for their first home match of the season.

For Colleagues, the top four grades will be looking to continue the solid start they made last week against Knox, with Sutherland and Barbour looking for their first win of the year.

One of the highlights of Saturday’s fixtures at Drummoyne Oval will be the 2015 Whiddon Cup Grand Final re-match between the two sides. TG Milner was the venue of an epic GF last year that saw the bad guys holding on to a 15 – 14 victory. Although tomorrow’s Colleagues side will look fairly different to the side that ran out last season, outside centre Morgan Jones (photo right) is one of the few returners joining the influx of new talent. Jones who put in a Man of the Match performance against Knox last week will be expecting a barrage of attacking players coming down his channel tomorrow.

Kick off Times at Drummoyne Oval

• Kentwell – 3.15pm
• Burke – 2pm
• Barbour – 12:45pm
• Widddon – 11:40am
• Judd – 10:45am
• Sutherland vs Mosman 6th – 9am

Rawson Oval
• Halligan v Mosman 5th – 10:00am
Jon Ryan will be on hand from 11am for any player that has not yet signed a 2016 rego form. All players must complete.

Grand Final Re-Match for Whiddon

by Carl O’Sullivan

This weekend sees a grand final rematch with the magnificent men of Woollahra Colleagues taking on the old foe the Dirty Reds @ Drummoyne old at 1140.  The 2015 GF was a nail biter with Drummoyne securing a penalty goal in the final few minutes to win 15-14, however the fact remains Colleagues had not beaten the Brumbies…I mean Drummoyne all year with narrow losses at home (15-17) and away (17-10) and in the GF.

2016 sees a new look coaching team with the return of Mark Ratcliff from hiatus for the past couple of seasons and the promotion of Jason Monteath from the Dome to the Throne.  The influx of new players to the club has also seen some new faces in the Whiddon side including promising you talent Tom Lomax and Piri Cockbird joined alongside self-pronounced club legends Darren Thomas, Tony ‘fun time’ Kastelan, Nick Bibby, Stuart Hughes and the aggressive Nick ‘Flowers’ valentine.  This Saturday also witnesses the virgin captaincy Ed Bradley* who’s aggressive and verbal elasticity will surely add to the contest.

All in all this builds to be a momentous clash between two proud and determined clubs looking for early bragging rights in 2016.  Saturday could set the tone for the rest of the year and indeed, life in general.
*unconfirmed, but surely it hasn’t happened before

Colleagues Supporting Rainbow Laces Round

The Blue Giants will be wearing some of the 100,000 pairs of rainbow laces have been handed out to professionals and amateurs for what is being called ‘the Rainbow Round of Sport’.

Former Colleague and Sydney Convicts President Andrew Purchas is the co-founder of the Pride in Sport Index, and said these kinds of statements must be made more often, because homophobia continues to plague sport in Australia and around the world.

Colleagues News December 2015

New Club Captain

Woollahra Colleagues has a new Club Captain in 2016. Mark “Blacky” Blackmore (second from the right).

After a great year as Club Captain, Damon “Dingo” Holmes made the decision to stand down. Dingo has been a tremendous asset to the club over the past 12 months, but due to increasing work commitments taking him out Sydney he decided to put the grubber through for the next magnificent man to pick up and run with. Great effort on and off the field each week and weekend.

Mark started at Colleagues in 2012 originally starting at number 8 however… after a number of coaches heard of his pedigree he has now found himself a home at loose head prop… under protest.

Studying Civil Engineering at Newcastle University, Blacky played 5 Seasons for Merewether Carlton winning a couple of premierships in the Colts and 2 grade sides. Following Uni he moved to London and played for Esher for 3 years before moving back to Sydney where he came down to Blue Giant Stadium.

Some may not know but Blacky has spent a large part of his childhood growing up in Buckinghamshire on the outskirts of London, he started his rugby career playing in England for Beaconsfield under 6’s through to under 12’s before his family moved back to the family farm in Stroud, located about an hour north of Newcastle. Itching to get back to rugby Blacky signed up for the Gloucester Magpies and had the privilege to play two seasons with his old man, Blacky was the youngest at 16 (flanker) while his Dad was the oldest at 48 (loose head prop), some photos attached!

Outside of rugby Blacky works as a Risk and Compliance Manager for Lendlease, a national role where he works on developing and auditing governance systems on new civil projects across the country. He is also a Surry Hills local with his girlfriend Cara.

In keeping with such great tradition, the Bondi Tens wish to continue to contribute the development of the game and in 2016 will host the Inaugural National 10’s Rugby Championship.

Held on Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th of February at Colleagues, the tournament will welcome teams from all around the country as they vie for the foundation title and come together to celebrate and recapture the collegiate spirit of all things rugby.

As a part of registration, all teams will be allocated 20 two-day passes to the Sydney Sevens on the 6th and 7th of February at Allianz Stadium where the Bondi 10’s will form the core of the South Stand Party.

Grand Final Week

GRAND FINALS: Five from Six Up for Grabs for Blue Giants

For the first time since 2011, the Woollahra Colleagues Rugby Union Football Club will have at five sides competing for Suburban Rugby Division 1 Grand Finals, after the Burke, Whiddon, Judd, Sutherland and Barbour Cup teams had successful semi-final campaigns over the last two weekends.

Grand Final victories would be icing on the cake for the Blue Giants after claiming the Club Championship and four minor premierships so far this season. A victory for the Colts would be especially outstanding, as it was nine years ago that they last held the Barbour Cup in 2006.

Colleagues Burke, Whiddon and Sutherland Cup teams will also be looking to go back to back after their wins in the 2014 Grand Finals.

T G Millner Field, Vimiera Rd, Eastwood

Kick-off time on field #1

  • Kentwell 3.00pm Balmain v Knox
  • Burke 1.20pm Colleagues v Mosman
  • Barbour 11.40am Colleagues v Mosman
  • Whiddon 10.15am Colleagues v Drummoyne
  • Judd 9.00am St Patrick’s v Colleagues

Kick-off time on field #2

  • Sutherland 10:20am Colleagues v Mosman

Dont miss this fantastic day of Rugby up at Eastwood. let’s paint the stand blue.

Blue Brick Road to the GF

In the first week of semi-finals at the David Phillip Field, it took a while for Colleagues as a whole to warm up for. The Sutherland Cup boys fought out a 10 all draw against Petersham but thankfully progressed as they were the higher ranked team at the end of the regular season.

Judd Cup also fought out a gripping match but went down to St Pats in the final minutes of the match by a single point. Thankfully the Campbell-Avenell/Monteath coached side had a second chance last Saturday against Mosman and were triumphant 28 points to 8.

In third grade it was all Colleagues for three quarters of the match, with the Blue Giants getting out to a comfortable 32-6 lead early in the second half. Mosman’s come back was too little too late, so Dingo’s men progress to the GF.

In equally impressive matches in both intensity and skill, Colleague’s Barbour and Burke Cup teams dominated their Mosman rivals right across the park. Physicality at the breakdown, strength at the set piece and execution out wide ensured the Whales were never really let in the game. Great rugby!

• Burke – Colleagues 22 – 9 Mosman
• Widdon – Colleagues 32 – 20 Mosman
• Judd – Semi Final 1: Colleagues 20 – 21 Old St Pats – Semi Final 2: Colleague 28 – 8 Mosman
• Sutherland – Colleagues 10 – 10 Petersham (Colleagues progress)
• Barbour – Colleagues 29 – 17 Mosman

The Dingo Dispatch

The time has come fellas with 5 out of 6 teams in the GF it’s a tremendous achievement and I commend you all on reaching it this far!! Although its not over until the fat lady sings so stay off the Rico Gears (Beers) Friday night, (or stick to the strict single beer per facility rule).

Get out there early and support the lads from Suthoes to Burkeys!! It will be a great day for colleagues and lets get up 1 better than last year!! All the best and remember if your not first your last…and you don’t want to be last so up the guts and into em.

P.S no undie sundie on Sunday…get around it.

Unequivocal regards,

Dingo

Semi Finals Week 1

Five Teams In Major Semi Finals

After a very successful regular season, which consisted of 4 minor premierships and the Div 1 Club Championship, five Colleagues teams will play out the major semi final tomorrow at the David Phillips Field in Daceyville.

Only one win away from a grand final birth in two weeks, Burke Cup through to Sutherland Cup will go into their semi-final matches as minor premiers and reigning champions of their respective grades, but not necessary as favourites. Burke Cup will need to bounce back after losses in both outings against Mosman in the regular season, while Whiddons will be on their toes after their 1-1 record over the Whales this year.

For the Barbour Cup it’s been a slightly different lead up. Finishing second in the regular season and with one win a piece over Mosman, the Colties will be out to prove their round 14 win was no fluke.

Regular Season Results
Mosman v Burke Cup – R4 Lost 16-14, R14 Lost 27-17
Mosman v Whiddon Cup – R4 Lost 14-10, R14 Won 25-10
St Pats v Judd Cup – R1 Won 49-0, R10 Won 30-10
Petersham v Sutherland Cup – R5 Won 14-7, R13 Won 24-0
Mosman v Barbour Cup – R04 Lost 22-5, R14 Won 40-21

Colleagues Kentwell Cup season has unfortunately come to an end. The Blue Giants top team missed out on the semi-finals by the slimmest of margins, only a win differential. Colleagues, Mosman and Brothers all finished the regular season on 41 competition points but Brothers advanced as they secured the most wins during the season.

Ladies Day #2 vs Brothers

Another great turnout for Colleagues Ladies Day #2 last saturday. Fantastic turnout by the 150 ladies at Blue Giant Stadium. Big thanks to Goochy, Leigh, Jonny Ryan, Michael and John Kelly for all their efforts in putting on a great day.

The Dingo Dispatch

Congratulations fellas on the club championship this year, it’s been quite disjointed and with a few midweek games and wet weather games thrown in the mix it’s a credit to you for turning up and competing tremendously.

Amongst all that we had another successful ladies day and I’ll like to thank Goochy first and foremost as well as DB who had a lot of input and the Kelly gang for spinning a few yarns and helping when needed (all this helped TK get a Ronaldino (root) in the end……no confirmation as of yet though).

Furthermore this weekend sees from 2’s to the nuts and bolts competing in the major semi-final, and now’s the time to turn up and get right into em. Some advice for beverage intake this evening only 0-9 golden throat Chalmers per beverage facility and you’ll be good to go for a few chip and chases show and goes on sat.

All the best fellas and remember, your pissin with the dogs now (finals) so lift your leg …and lift it HIGH.

Warmest Dingo

Triple Taylors

After many years of watching his boys from the sideline, Peter Taylor (centre) decided it was time to pull on a jersey and run out with his sons Sam (left) and James (right) against Lane Cove in last Saturday’s Halligans Cup match. Running around like he was in his early 20s, Peter got stuck in to Lane Cove at every occasion.
What does it say when your 53 year old Dad comes off the field dirtier than you?

Great stuff Taylors!

The Dingo Dispatch

With a very close blue rinse against Iggies over the weekend, it was good to see the Kentwell boys continue their strong run into the finals. I would also like to thank the Kelly twins for their contribution/ organising of the ball which went off like a cut snake.

It was a great night and I’m sure everyone was hung dog millionaire on Sunday. We have the dirty reds this wknd so it will be a great test for all teams to step up and get those extra points towards the club championship which is certainly attainable!!

Best of luck lads and remember don’t crush to many golden throat Chalmers as we need to get maximum points this wknd against a bunch of dumb dogs(dramoine).

Colleagues Ball

Thanks for everyone for attending the annual Colleagues Black Tie Ball. It was a fantastic night down on the harbour. Big thanks to the John and Mike Kelly, and Charlie Valentine (Flowers wife) for leading the organisation of the ball. You guys did an incredible job!

NO PAY NO PLAY!!!

Its got to the pointy end of the season and we are taking a hard stance on player fees this year. If you havent paid by the 1st of August you will not be eligable for selection. If you have issues with payments you can see Ding, Prez or DB and we can arrange installments etc.

John ryan has done a remarkable job this season to chase you all up and should be commended for it continual hard work. He will be at the game tomorrow for most of the morning and afternoon so it shouldn’t be an issue to pay.

The Dingo Dispatch

What a tremendous display of running rugby witnessed last weekend as another Blue Rinse was achieved against Knox. At one stage there I thought I was watching a test match in burkey’s given the significant score line. This weekend is a catch-up game against Old Iggies and I’m sure we can once again get the job done across the grades. With the black tie ball also on sat night which will be a great turnout of tremendous competitors remember don’t crush too many rico gears (Beers) tonight and save up for sat night so we can roll old iggies in tally’ho paper and smoke em tomorrow.
